What should everyone know about bird feeding?
Publish date: 3 December 2019
Helping birds get the food and survive the harshest part of the year is a thing worth trying. However, you should do it properly. When we decide to feed the birds, we need to remember that we will be responsible for those that pay us a visit. Therefore, to provide a healthy and nutritious buffet for them, we need to be aware of a few rules.
- Choose a safe place.
Install the feeder somewhere that the birds are not threatened by predators, such as cats.
- Feed only when necessary.
Feed the birds mainly during the winter, when the cold weather makes it difficult for them to find enough food.
- Keep the feeder topped up!
Feed the birds on a regular basis. They quickly get used to places where they can find food and stop looking for it elsewhere. Regular refilling of your feeder will encourage more bird species to come, especially if you keep the feeder clean.
- Make healthy choices.
Choose suitable food, such as maize, sunflower and pumpkin seeds, oat flakes, other cereals, rowan fruit or the seeds of wild plants. Avoid white bread and salty food, which can harm them. Make sure that they also have access to fresh water.
- Keep the feeder clean.
Clean the feeder regularly – removing old food and keeping it clean helps prevent diseases from spreading.
